Appointment of Richard W. M. Cashman

MWP is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Richard Cashman, as a Senior Lawyer.

Richard is a graduate of the Moscow State Institute for International Relations of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MGIMO), and also of King’s College London, The Inns of Court School of Law and BPP Law School. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2009, and is a member of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple.

Richard’s professional experience began in 2003 at the Leeds Combined Court Centre as a Clerk and Shorthand Writer. He also worked as a Legal Assistant at the Special Department for War Crimes at the State Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2010 he continued his career as an Associate Fellow at The Henry Jackson Society foreign policy think tank in London. From 2012 to 2015 Richard practised as a Barrister at 9 Bedford Row International and Thomas More Chambers in London. Richard has represented a wide range of clients in all stages of litigation, appearing alone in the Court of Appeal, High Court, Old Bailey and other Crown, Magistrates’ and County Courts of England and Wales, in both private and legally-aided cases involving fraud, proceeds of crime, firearms, drugs, theft, violence, sexual and road traffic offences, insolvency and small claims. He has also worked on cases heard at the International Crimes Tribunal in Bangladesh concerning genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, and has acted as Disclosure Counsel at the UK Serious Fraud Office.

Richard is the author of numerous articles and position papers on UK and EU foreign policy, trans-Atlantic relations, Eurasian geopolitics and international law, Richard has also co-authored two books: Misha: The Inside Story of the Leader that Shook the Post-Soviet World (Biteback: due 2016) - a critical biography of the former Georgian president, focusing on political and legal reform in the former CIS country, based on hours of interviews with Saakashvili, his key ministers and advisers, as well as The World Island: Eurasian Geopolitics and the Fate of the West (Praeger: 2011). Richard speaks Russian and is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
