Leading the Firm’s IP Practice Group is Almira R. Alipinova who joins MWP from Kazakhstan’s National Institute of Intellectual Property where she served as the head of the trademarks and industrial samples examination service for the last three years. Her responsibilities have ranged widely including the formal and substantive examination of industrial designs, the preliminary and complete examination of trademark applications, the filing of international trademark registrations under the Madrid Agreement, and the examination of the origin of brand name goods.

In addition to examination at all stages, Almira considered appeals filed by trademark applicants, litigated IP rights infringements, represented the interests of the National Institute before the Appeal Board of the IP Committee, and provided consultation and assistance to law enforcement authorities and customs agencies on the protection of IP owners’ rights issues. In addition, Almira organized training covering the fundamentals of IP and trademarks and gave lectures on a full range of IP and trademark topics.

Considered an expert of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Industry and Trade, Almira not only played an important role in drafting the following - Patent Law, Trademark Law, amendments to the Civil Code, Customs Code, Administrative Code, Examination Procedures manual – but also examined and reviewed the statutory acts and draft laws needed to bring the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan into compliance with the requirements of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights with respect to Kazakhstan’s accession to the World Trade Organization.

A registered Patent Attorney and graduate of St. Petersburg State University, Almira has more than ten years experience working in different areas of commercial law such as tax, real estate and investments, as well as settling consumer rights disputes and labour issues involving health and safety in the workplace. Almira holds certificates on IP from the World Intellectual Property Organisation in Switzerland, as well as from the Russian Institute of Intellectual Property.

Having served many years at the National Institute of Intellectual Property working alongside Almira, Almat Umbetov joins the Firm as a certified Patent Attorney at Law. He is considered a leading expert in state registry matters, commercialisation and estimation, as well as in information and analytical research services. Almat is fluent in English, having graduated with honours from Taraz State University, and he is an honours graduate of law from South Kazakhstan State University. He has also continued his professional education by regularly attending courses at the WIPO in Switzerland and at the Federal Institute of Industrial Property in Moscow.
